A census of marine life: Unknowable or just unknown? ArchiMer
Decker, Cj; O'Dor, R.
As an introduction to the entire volume, this article outlines the relationships among the five elements of the Census of Marine Life (CoML) that create new knowledge: (1) The Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS), a marine component of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, links marine databases around the world to provide an Internet accessible, dynamic interface for comparing species-level, geo-referenced biodiversity data in relation to ocean habitats. The entire CoML field project data will be managed in and accessible through OBIS. (2) The History of Marine Animal Populations (HMAP) is a unique new synthesis of historical and biological research that will document marine biodiversity, globally, up to 500 years ago, before significant...

Goulletquer, Philippe.
The effect of climate changes on marine ecosystems and the ecosystemic services identified in the framework of the World ecosystem assessment program for the millennium (MEA, 2001), is a major scientific issue. In the first place, it seems necessary to identify these changes' characteristics from a physics point of view, as well as from a specific biodiversity (e.g., species distribution areas, exotic and invasive species), populational or marine ecosystem functioning point of view (e.g., trophic chain). However, one of the main difficulties in assessing these impacts results from the superposition and the interactions between natural variability and the different anthropic effects including economic activities (e.g. fisheries). A number of doubts remain,...

Complexity in trophic structure and stability in a modelled West African estuary ArchiMer
Villanueva, Ching-maria; Diouf, P.s.; Albaret, J.-j.; Moreau, J..

Conservation of marine habitats under multiple human uses. Methods, objectives and constraints to optimize a Marine Protected Areas network in the eastern English Channel ArchiMer
Delavenne, Juliette.
The eastern English Channel is a significant economic area that supports a number of human-based activities, such as tourism and recreational activities, international ports and shipping, and the extraction of both living and mineral resources. In addition, the region supports a number of important marine biological features and large habitat diversity. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are increasingly used as a management tool to foster a sustainable exploitation of marine resources in an ecosystem based management framework. All European countries have a legal obligation to develop MPA networks in their national waters. However, there has to date been only limited attempts to coordinate the design and positioning of such networks at an international level...

Levrel, Harold; Hay, Julien; Bas, Adeline; Gastineau, Pascal; Pioch, Sylvain.
The cost of ecosystem services degradation is a major topic as underlined by the TEEB program (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity), which proposed an assessment of the costs of policy inaction in the field of biodiversity conservation. In the same vein, the report of the French Centre for Strategic Analysis on the Economic Approach to Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services turns its attention to the value of ecosystem services, suggesting some elements that could help measure the cost of biodiversity degradation. There is however some confusion regarding the notion of cost. Thus, in the case of TEEB the proposed cost assessment translates into monetary terms the loss of potential profits from ecological services. Yet, another way of assessing these...

During recent decades, works on rocky shore biodiversity have been multiplied in the southern part of the Bay of Biscay and more precisely on intertidal and subtidal area were communities present a great interest. Necessity of conservation of coastal habitats and their communities and a growing pressure on coastal environments explain awareness of services provided by these ecosystems. Those communities are very sensitive to water quality change. Moreover, since the beginning of the XXI century various European directives require a good ecological status of coastal waters and conservation of their communities : Water Framework Directive (WFD), Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and conservation of habitats with Directive Habitat Fauna and Flora...

Quero, Jean-claude; Du Buit, Marie-henriette; Vayne, Jean-jacques.
A recapitulation of the records of tropical fishes from European Atlantic waters shows that 67.6 % were fishes caught from the upper slope, between approximately 200 and 600 m; 19.8 % were fishes caught from the continental shelf; and 13.5 % were specimens caught from the middle slope, between 700 and 1 300 m. Since 1963, the upper slope species have made regular northward range extensions off of south Portugal to north-western Ireland (about 55 degrees 30' N), more and less rapidly, about 30 years for Cyttopsis roseus and only 6 years for Sphoeroides pachygaster. The continental shelf species, observed from 1969 but mostly from 1981, have a northward range to south-eastern Ireland (about 52 degrees N), but 65.2 % of them have been caught off the south of...

Prou, Jean; Piquet, Jean-come; Goulletquer, Philippe; Mongruel, Remi; Ryckaert, Mireille.

Fabri, Marie-claire; Daniel, Boris; Et Tous Les Participants,.
Bringing together France, Italy and the Principality of Monaco since 1976, the RAMOGE agreement is born of an awareness of the pollution of the sea. Its aim is to raise public awareness, develop actions and make recommendations for the preservation of the marine environment. In 2015, an exploration campaign of the deep zones of the RAMOGE area made it possible to acquire new data in the Natura 2000 sites of "Corniche Varoise" and "l'Estérel", as well as on other Italian and Monegasque sectors. . The RAMOGE project "exploration of deep zones of ecological interest" is based on 3 phases. Each country is invited to become involved in the implementation of one of these phases. After Italy in 2015, which facilitated the provision of nautical resources for...

This paper shows, from three perspectives, how the environmental policies in French Guiana, trying to deal with the local cultural diversity, tend to ethnicize social relations. The Guiana Amazonian Park, which seems to be a reaffirmation of the state’s presence in the southern French Guiana, experiments modes of governance which increase interethnic competition. The implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization has introduced a difference between different categories of the population : some of them must be consulted whereas the others mustn’t. Finally, people from immigration are a blind-spot of these policies. Migrants do not have any facility to access...
